This Christmas season we embraced this thought even more than previous years, making time for family and friends a priority and more importantly spending time just the four of us sharing many laughs and joys. Slow starts to mornings, leading to some days not even leaving the house doing whatever and spending as much time playing games and talking and laughing as a family. Hours and days slipped by without a care in the world. Could hold onto those moments forever.
We gathered with friends, played guitar and violin, went skating and sledding and played many many hours of games. Just the right way to end the year and bring in the new.
Christmas celebrations were to be had, with all our family members sharing wonderful meals prepared by all, we kicked it off with our traditional meal for Christmas Eve and just kept celebrating for the next several days. Its always lovely when you can sit down and enjoy a fabulous meal that you didn't have to prepare.
Early December we received a snow storm to put us all into the Christmas spirit, thankfully 12 hours after our hike into the woods for our Christmas tree. The city is covered in a white blanket making all the twinkling lights outside sparkle even brighter.
We have now traveled the city to decorate both sets of grandparent's trees spreading the wonderful joy of Christmas with our loved ones. Our little Elves had so much fun and doing these sorts of things reminds me how capable they are and how very large their hearts are.
Mikulas made a surprise visit to tiny shoes that were left at Nagymama's many, many years ago!
With the decorations all complete it is now time to think of the meals and plan out each day, leaving plenty of time for outdoor activities and family and friends.
First of December brings a beautiful snow fall that will more than likely stay a few days, even Brahms was excited and couldn't contain himself.
We are starting to warm the house up with Christmas cheer, advent calendars and wreath, Christmas cards, songs and baking. We are all looking forward to a couple weeks together enjoying the mood that Christmas brings with it.
This year we organized a capture the flag game out in the woods with his friends and two of his favorite teachers, and Oliver joined us as well. It was a wonderful evening running around in the woods, capturing the chicken flags and exploring the forts and a small portion of our woods by our house. We sung happy birthday by the light of our flashlights and came back home just in time for the end of the party.
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
This year for Halloween we stayed home, and enjoyed a quick party with friends before the kids went out trick or treating. Never knowing what the weather will bring in Calgary end of October we were lucky to not book our annual trip to California and stay home as it was extremely pleasant.
Aniko went out with some little friends in the neighborhood and half way through the evening I received a text that she lost a tooth! It must have been a real sticky candy as this tooth wasn't even wiggly, I went out to join them to ensure all was well and had some trick or treating fun of my own.
Gabor went out with a few friends alone, and later drew a map of which houses he visited and gave us a step by step of all the fun they had, which houses had good candy and which ones they avoided - I should file that away for next year.
I'm glad we stayed home this year, and I hope that this is not the last family themed costumes - Elsie pulled it together so nicely and we certainly had a lot of fun.
